Amla is considered a superfood: it is extremely rich in Vitamin A and C. It also contains high levels of folic acid, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, carotene and magnesium.

Amla is used to slow the effects of aging and to restore overall organ function. In Ayurvedic medicine, the fruit juice is given to strengthen the pancreas of diabetics. It is one of the three herbs in the classic Ayurvedic herbal formula known as “Triphala.” The Indian gooseberry features in a 7th-century Ayurvedic medical text. The sage Muni Chyawan is known to have restored his vitality using amla.

The alkaline nature of Amla is known to clear and strengthen the digestive system. The high fiber content of Amla is excellent for the digestive system as it cures constipation. Amla also contains anti-inflammatory properties, therefore dried Amla powder can be used to cure hyperacidity and prevent stomach ulcers.

Recent research suggests that Indian gooseberry might have a remarkably wide range of potential medicinal benefits. A study in Kerala, India, showed that it may have protective activity against liver cancer. Other studies indicate potential anti-inflammatory and fever inhibiting effects, and a cholesterol-lowering action. A study undertaken in Bombay concluded that the fruit might prove useful in the treatment of acute pancreatitis.

Preparation: soak fruit in water for 30 minuted to soften in, then blend and add to smoothies and juices. It can also be ground to make amla powder. The powder in turn can be mixed with water, honey and made into a face mask. Amla water can be used as a hair rinse. It is known to encourage hair growth, prevent hair loss and restore damaged hair.

Caution: Amla fruit can also lead to dehydration. So, it is recommended to drink lots of water after consuming amla, or any astringent herb in general.
