Description: The name comes from monks taking the berries to reduce sexual desire. The berries are thought to induce subtle hormonal effects within the brain, leading to increased levels of progesterone and the neurotransmitters dopamine and melatonin, which promotes better hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle. In some people, the raised melatonin levels may aid sleep quality.
Chaste tree also promotes greater menstrual regularity, and this use extends to more significant hormonal problems including polycystic ovary syndrome, fibroids, and endometriosis.
Preparation:
Decoction- add berries to water and boil for 5-7 minutes, then reduce to a simmer for 10-15 minutes, let cool then sweeten or enjoy as is.
