Medicinal Name: Valeriana officinalis
Properties: sedative, hypnotic, anti-spasmodic, hypotensive, carminative
Treatment: mental exertion, over stimulation, panic, stress, tension, chronic anxiety, PMS, menopause, muscle cramps, insomnia, intestinal colic
Description: Many symptoms of anxiety, including tremors, panic, palpitations, and sweating, can be relieved with valerian. It is a useful remedy for insomnia, whether caused by anxiety or overexcitement.
As an antispasmodic herb it will aid in the relief of cramp and intestinal colic and will also be useful for the cramps and pain of periods. As a pain reliever it is most indicated where that pain is associated with tension. Valerian can help in migraine and rheumatic pain
Preparation:
Infusion- pour a cup of boiling water onto 1–3 teaspoonsful of the dried herb and leave to infuse for 10–15 minutes
Decoction- add 1-2 tbsp of root to water and bring to a boil then lower heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes
Caution: Can cause drowsiness. Do not take valerian if already taking sleep-inducing drugs.
